Partner project
Thousands of Ukrainians have received direct assistance and support (often vital), and millions have received indirect support. This is how the overall outcome of all the projects that participated in the “Partnership for Sustainability Award – 2023” campaign can be described. We will tell you about the top 14 that won in their categories. And together with you, we will determine the winner among the readers` favorites.
Within the framework of the “Partnership for Sustainable Development” competition, which has been organized by the UN Global Compact in Ukraine since 2018, the activities of international and Ukrainian companies and organizations that help people, invest in state building, and care about the ecological future are recognized. This year, the geography of participating companies in the national campaign was broad: Ukraine, Great Britain, France, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, Finland, Croatia, Poland, Georgia, Romania, Bulgaria, and Turkey.
Most of the projects that won focused on the war: plastic surgery and prosthetics for military personnel, restoration of water supply in areas affected by the explosion of the Kakhovska HPP, medical assistance to people in front-line territories, assistance to Ukrainian refugees in Europe, and many other good deeds.
An important feature of all projects is that none of them is a “solo performance” of a single company or organization. All of them were implemented in partnership and contributed to achieving the 17th Sustainable Development Goal. Briefly, it can be explained as the development of partnership interaction between government, business, and society.
This year, out of 160 applications, the international jury selected 14 projects that were implemented both in Ukraine and abroad, in homes, offices, and trenches. The winners were chosen in the following categories: “Warriors of Light”, “Prosperity”, “Planet” and “People”.

Through legal mechanisms, two citizens of the United Kingdom serving in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, who were captured and sentenced to execution in the territories occupied by Russia, have been successfully released.
In June 2022, the families of two military servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, who were taken captive and sentenced to execution, approached the Hogan Lovells company for assistance. Within 48 hours, the company obtained interim measures from the European Court of Human Rights. The court demanded that the Russian Federation ensure the non-enforcement of the death penalty, provide them with proper conditions of detention, and necessary medical assistance. This case drew media attention, and the Russian authorities were compelled to provide comments. The servicemen were released in September 2022.
The company worked to file comprehensive claims regarding violations of several articles of the European Convention on Human Rights (the right to life, the right to a fair trial, and the prohibition of torture). To do so, the firm’s lawyers gathered witnesses` testimonies with detailed descriptions of all actions by the Russia-controlled authorities.
Hogan Lovells is an international law firm whose specialists provide free assistance to individuals and charitable organizations in matters related to domestic and international human rights law. The firm’s lawyers work to file civil suits against the Russian Federation and also approach various governments and international organizations to ensure that Russian assets and corresponding fines are directed to benefit Ukrainian victims.

Twenty-two Administrative Service Centres are now equipped with solar cells on their roofs, ensuring uninterrupted operation even during power outages. Specialists from the company Atmosfera prepared the necessary documentation and installed the equipment.
Energy security is ensured by autonomous solar power stations with capacities ranging from 5 to 30 kW. Photovoltaic modules generate electricity and supply it to backup power systems, storing excess energy. The batteries automatically activate to power the centers in case of a power outage. The system also switches to them every evening to reduce the load on the overall power grid.
The project of the East Europe Foundation, implemented within the Swiss-Ukrainian EGAP Program and in collaboration with the technical partner Atmosfera, assists communities in the Dnipropetrovsk, Vinnytsia, Odesa, Volyn, and Chernihiv regions. In addition to ASC, the project also provides electricity to shelters for internally displaced persons from the Luhansk region.
Atmosfera is a developer of energy solutions for homes and businesses. The company designs, builds, and maintains solar power stations, energy storage systems, and heat pumps. Its mission is to equip 1,000,000 solar roofs by 2030, contributing to the development of a sustainable energy system in Ukraine through renewable energy.

In an exceptionally short timeframe of 45 days, solar panels were installed on the buildings of five retail centers of the “Epicenter” chain. The total capacity that 20,000 panels can generate is 6,000 kW, sufficient, for example, to illuminate a million 5W light bulbs. The construction was completed during the summer period, the most efficient time for the operation of solar power stations.
In the future, all companies within the group plan to equip their facilities with solar panels. The “Epicenter” network became the first Ukrainian retailer to extensively leverage solar energy for its business needs.
The solar panels are expected to operate for the next 40 years. In addition to energy generation, the power stations offer other benefits by saving land resources, as they are installed on the roofs of shopping centers. Each year, these solar power stations will prevent the atmospheric pollution of up to 2 million tons of CO2 emissions, or, in terms of forest preservation, prevent the destruction of 43 million trees.
